Split Testing

« Back to Glossary Index

Split testing, also known as A/B testing, is a method of comparing two or more variations of a design, feature, or strategy to determine which performs better in achieving a specific goal. It is a widely used technique in both Design Thinking and Growth Hacking, enabling teams to validate ideas, optimise solutions, and make data-driven decisions.

In Design Thinking:

  • Testing Prototypes: Split testing is used during the Testing stage to compare different prototypes or design elements, such as layouts, colours, or navigation flows, to evaluate which version provides the best user experience.
  • User-Centred Validation: By analysing user interactions with each variation, split testing helps teams identify the design that aligns most closely with user needs and expectations.
  • Iterative Refinement: The insights gained from split testing allow design teams to iteratively improve their solutions, ensuring they address pain points effectively and enhance usability.

In Growth Hacking:

  • Optimising Conversion Rates: Growth teams use split testing to evaluate marketing strategies, such as comparing different headlines, call-to-action buttons, or email subject lines, to maximise engagement and conversions.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: By running controlled experiments, split testing provides quantitative data on which variation performs best, enabling teams to focus on strategies that deliver measurable results.
  • Scaling Success: Once a winning variation is identified, growth hackers can scale the strategy to reach a larger audience, ensuring resources are allocated to the most impactful approach.

Examples of Application:

  • In Design Thinking: Testing two versions of a mobile app’s onboarding flow—one with a step-by-step tutorial and the other with a video walkthrough—to see which users complete more frequently.
  • In Growth Hacking: Running a split test for an e-commerce website to compare two versions of a product page, one with a discount prominently displayed and the other highlighting customer reviews, to determine which drives more purchases.

Split testing is a powerful method in both Design Thinking and Growth Hacking for validating ideas and optimising solutions. By leveraging real user behaviour and data, teams can refine their designs and strategies to ensure they are effective, impactful, and aligned with user and business goals.
